‘ELPHT’ lounge CHAIR

Chair inspired by sustainable manufacturing

ABOUT

The brief was to use varying software packages to develop a chair, using the technique of generative design. Ensuring the chair must consider the loading forces optimize the best structure which is both aesthetically pleasing and provides sustainable manufacturing; to tackle the problem of mass manufacturing of furniture that ends up in landfill each year.

Generative design mimics nature’s evolutionary approach to design. It’s a design tool that is used in combination with various other CAD packages to develop inputs, which generates different parameters such as materials, manufacturing methods, and cost or constraints. Unlike simple optimization methods, this particular CAD packaging software that was used explores all for the exploration of various permutations of a solution and quickly generate the best structure for the ‘Elepht chair design’. It also tests and learns from each iteration or change in the calculation to understand what structures and loading forces work in different scenarios, such as a shift in weight.
